At Skookum Works, we’re committed to creating the best gear for your needs. To keep delivering high-quality, durable products, we’re adjusting the price of our Hot Mic to $39.99 CAD. This reflects the additional time, material, and care that go into crafting each unit. Let us walk you through our design process and explain why this change is necessary.
The Skookum Works Design Process
Every product we design is carefully measured and tested to ensure it works seamlessly with each radio model. Here’s how we create our Hot Mics:
Step 1: Hands-On Design
We start by handling the radio or radio part for which we’re designing the guard. Precise measurements ensure the product will fit perfectly and function properly.
Step 2: 3D Modeling
Using a 3D scanner, we create a highly accurate model of the radio. This allows us to design a product that fits like a glove.
Step 3: CAD Design
Next, we use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to draft our prototype. This process involves fine-tuning every aspect to ensure the highest performance standards.
Step 4: 3D Printing Prototypes
Once the CAD design is ready, our 3D printers start running, producing multiple prototypes. These are tested and refined until we get the perfect fit.
Step 5: Fine-Tuning Details
After perfecting the basic design, we add in all the finer details—ensuring comfort, durability, and ease of use in real-world situations.
Step 6: Field Testing
Before releasing any product, we conduct field tests to gather real-world feedback. This helps us make final adjustments before the product is available for purchase.
Why the Price Change?
In addition to the detailed design process, the materials we use to create the Hot Mic are part of why we’re adjusting the price. For the Hot Mic, we use TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), a premium thermoplastic material known for its:
High wear resistance and resilience
Excellent tear strength, elasticity, and durability
Resistance to water, oil, grease, fuel, solvents, chemicals, and elevated temperatures
Easy-to-wash and sterilize properties
Recyclability, making it an environmentally conscious choice
These features make TPU the ideal material for the Hot Mic, ensuring it is flexible enough to fit on your speaker mic, and durable to stand up to daily wear and tear.
By contrast, our Knob Blocker and Pager Blocker is made using PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol). PETG is a popular 3D printing material because of its:
High impact strength and durability
Resistance to water intrusion and excellent printability
Food-safe certification and recyclability
While PETG is a great material for The Knob Blocker and Pager Blocker, the added flexability of TPU make it the better choice for the Hot Mic.
